The spirit of travel
The Tibesti is an attractive destination that plunges us into the universe of a characterful desert. It is a long climb crossing empty expanses where unchanging populations live, great nomadic herders, fierce and legendary.
This adventure allows us to understand a wild and mythical Sahara through trials on sandy and volcanic tracks. We will see from afar a bluish mass, a certain Lure mountain, an imposing mountain in a landscape of sandstone cut and shaken by various geological phenomena, including the relentless erosion of the Harmattan. We venture into the heart of one of the most beautiful Saharan landscapes, at the foot of the highest point of Tibesti, on the land of the Téda.
This circuit offers both the ascent of the Volcano which culminates at 3,445 m and the exploration of tormented sedimentary massifs, which cluster at its base while forming one of the most sumptuous tassilist of the region. We discover sandstone citadels, vast sandy plains, arches, peaks, dunes, caves with paintings before reaching basaltic fields.
The stages of your journey
Highlights
Day-by-day itinerary

Arrival in N'Djamena
You land at Hassan Djamous international airport, located in the heart of N'Djamena, the capital of Tchad. This arrival marks the beginning of your journey to discover the country.

Ascent to Tibesti
You head northwest towards Mao, in Kanembou country. From there, you take a track that heads due north towards the Djourab dunes, in the heart of desert landscapes.
You then enjoy a trip to Anakaza, where you discover large herds of camels. Your journey continues across the dunes to the foothills of the Tibesti massif, a vast volcanic formation with an imposing character, often considered a rebellious and untamed citadel.
On the third day, you set up camp in the middle of the Djourab dunes. You then pass through the Charles de Gaulle roundabout before turning off to reach the Ourti dune.
On the fourth day, you continue exploring the Chadian Sahara until you reach the Borkou tassilis, whose rocky landscapes are reminiscent of southern Algeria. You spend the night there in bivouac, in the heart of this desert environment.

In the Tassilijii of Borkou
Tibesti → Tigui Cocoïna
You continue your journey in Tchad by exploring eroded reliefs and sandstone citadels, from the Laoua gap to Tigui. You progress from one rock formation to another, across the vast sandy plains that separate them. You then discover the Tigui Cocoïna cave, where you can admire well-preserved rock paintings, witnesses to the cultural heritage of the region.
These days of exploration include approximately 5 to 6 hours of walking per day, with the support of 4x4 vehicles.

On the slopes of the volcano
Tigui Cocoïna → Emi Koussi
You rejoin your camels to begin a camel trekking expedition towards the caldera of Emi Koussi, in the heart of the Tibesti massif. From an altitude of 930 meters, you progress slowly on the slopes of the volcano to gradually reach 3,280 meters altitude.
Your ascent crosses fields of basalt and ignimbrites, rocks formed from the solidification of ash clouds produced during the last volcanic eruption, approximately one million years ago. These mineral landscapes of the Sahara in Chad offer a suitable setting for walking and contemplation.
Each day includes approximately 7 hours of trekking, before reaching your bivouac in the winding beds of the wadis that run down the slopes of the volcano.
On the third day, you continue your ascent through these volcanic landscapes. As you gain altitude, the scenery evolves and the horizon widens. You then discover the immense caldera of Emi Koussi, formed by the collapse of the volcano's former magma chamber, spanning nearly 12 kilometers in diameter.
You finally reach 3,280 meters altitude. After approximately 7 hours of trekking, you set up your bivouac at altitude, where cool temperatures accompany this night in the heart of the Tibesti.

Descent towards the Erra Kohor caldera
Emi Koussi → Erra Kohor
You continue your hike in the Tibesti massif through a lunar landscape composed of volcanic ash, steep reliefs and light green pastures, whose appearance changes throughout the seasons.
You then begin the descent towards Erra Kohor, a caldera concentric to that of Emi Koussi, at the heart of this volcanic environment.
After approximately 5 hours of hiking, you set up your bivouac on the edge of this second crater, at 3,000 meters altitude.

The highest point
Erra Kohor → Tataï
You continue your hike in the Tibesti massif by passing through the Tataï pass, before beginning your ascent towards the mountain's summit, which reaches 3,415 meters in altitude, above the central Sahara.
After reaching the summit, you begin your descent accompanied by your camels, through the mountainous landscapes of Tibesti. You then set up your bivouac at 2,400 meters in altitude, for a night in the heart of this Saharan environment.

Volcanic descent towards Kaza Maza
Tataï → Kaza Maza
You continue your descent into the Tibesti massif through basalt flows and volcanic ash deposits. This hike of approximately 7 hours of walking takes you through the mineral landscapes of the volcano, until Kaza Maza, your destination for the day.

Swimming in the Yi Yerra oases
Kaza Maza → Yi Yerra
After approximately 6 hours of hiking in the Tibesti massif, you reach the small oases of Yi Yerra, where hot springs invite you to enjoy a relaxing swim. This moment of relaxation is an opportunity to rest after your trek through the Saharan landscapes.
You then set up your bivouac in a sand hollow, for a comfortable night in the heart of nature.

Discovery of the Gouro Oasis
Yi Yerra → Gouro
You take to the road in your 4x4 vehicles heading to Gouro, taking a rough track through the landscapes of the Sahara tchadien. You then reach the Gouro oasis, a charming place, still little frequented by travelers, which invites you to discover another facet of the desert.
You set up your bivouac in the surrounding tassiilis, in the heart of these rocky landscapes.

Guro - Ounianga
You leave Gouro by taking a comfortable track for 120 km towards the Ounianga lakes, in the heart of the Sahara in Tchad. Upon your arrival at Ounianga Kebir, you complete the necessary formalities before taking the opportunity to admire its two large salt lakes.
You then continue your journey towards Ounianga Serir, where you discover Lake Bokou, a freshwater lake bordered by golden dunes. You enjoy a swim in its waters before setting up your bivouac on the shore of the lake.

Ounianga Serir - Wadi doum - Faya
You join Faya at midday, before continuing your exploration towards the northern part of the oasis.
You discover the tassilis of Archana and Ouchi Bani, where sandstone reliefs blend with sand dunes. These landscapes also shelter remarkable rock paintings, which you can admire during this stage of your journey in the Chadian Sahara.

From Archana to the Dunes of Djourab
Faya-Largeau → Birrh 110
You leave for an excursion to Archana, to discover its rock paintings, which bear witness to the cultural heritage of this region of Tchad. You then head to the city for your meal, before strolling through the alleys of the Libyan market and discovering its local atmosphere.
In the evening, you leave the city and its palm grove to reach the foot of the dunes of Djourab. You set up your bivouac near well 110, on a white limestone ridge, in the heart of desert landscapes.
The Dunes of Djourab
Birrh 110 → Kuba Salal
In the early hours of the day, you set off to discover the dunes of Djourab, taking advantage of the cool morning air and the sand still cold to progress through the desert landscapes.
You then observe surprising inselbergs, isolated rocky reliefs in the middle of a vast clay basin, corresponding to the bottom of the Bahr el-Ghazal, remnant of an ancient inland sea of which Lake Tchad is today the survivor.
You also have the possibility to continue your exploration towards the west, in the direction of Korotoro, site of discovery of the remains of the australopithecus Abel, then of Toumaï. These ancient clay expanses, gradually covered with sand over several years, bear witness to the evolution of the landscapes as you continue your descent towards the Chadian Sahel.

Moussoro, Massakoury – N'Djaména
Kuba Salal → Moussoro
You continue your descent towards N'Djamena, the capital of Tchad, crossing through the territory of the Kréda at Moussoro, then the onion fields of Massaguette, before reaching the dry savanna landscapes.
If the free day scheduled in the program has not been used previously, you can dedicate it to a walk in Ounianga or Faya.
In the evening, you have your dinner before the transfer to the airport for your return flight.
